How Time Zones Work
The basic time-zone model divides the world into 24 one-hour reference zones around UTC, but real civil time is more detailed. Countries and regions choose legal time zones based on geography, commerce, history, and daylight saving rules.
Most offsets move in one-hour increments, but several places use 30-minute or 45-minute offsets. Real-world offsets range roughly from UTC-12 to UTC+14, and many locations change offset seasonally when daylight saving time is in effect.
This converter looks up cities, uses each city's IANA time-zone identifier when available, and keeps selected city times updated in real time so comparisons stay accurate as time passes. For a broader reference, see the world time zones guide.
